Pier Head Public Realm | Liverpool UK | AECOM | Waterfront Research
Pier Head Public Realm | Liverpool UK | AECOM
Why did you chose this city?
UK was chosen as the research topic because of its close evaluation to New York City. It is much like New York City’s location which attracts tourists, local residents, and workers.
What was the waterfront used from in the history?
The waterfront was once open space that had very little use for urban-ers, much like NYC areas. It was successful in turning 2.5 hectare of land into a "giant urban park." This land was part of the cities' World Heritage Site and constructed the first major extension to an urban canal.
What caused the change at the waterfront?
The "bold" cause for change at the waterfront was to revitalize the existing water spaces that involved boating activities at the piers route. Difficulties to access these areas decreased the amount of circulation within this area.
What are the transportation systems and the access to the waterfront?
Is there boat or water access?
How does the waterfront attract people?
The texture and function of the waterfront attracts people. The design of the public space at Pier Head provides a rich and varied experience for enjoying city and riverside views or simply watching boats float past. Adding texture and visual interest to the surface, the crease lines that create the paving folds run the length of the site, and are highlighted with a pale, warm-toned natural stone chosen to complement the facades of the Three Graces dockside buildings. Designed to guide rainwater collection through much of the space, the folds splay out as they approach the canal basins, to create a series of seat walls and flights of steps, then finally reconverge to continue their journey through the space.
What are the amenities?
The seating and sheltered places to sit are amenities to return closer to the water and enjoy the views of the city and sculptures. The seating is described as robust and is less prone to vandalism.
The "Three Graces" historic waterside buildings are a backdrop to the waterfront which provide beautiful views.
What type of retail/commercial/residential are at the waterfront?
The site includes the World Heritage Site, the new Museum of Liverpool Life and a mixed-use development of homes, shops and offices to the south. It also includes a remodeled ferry terminal.
What type of public spaces are there?
The space provides a new focus for tourists and Liverpool’s public events, and a catalyst for new energy and investment in the city.
Who uses these spaces?
Local Residents, tourists, bikers, boaters, and daily commuters.
What is successful about this waterfront development?
This waterfront has successfully connected the city to its urban land attracting crowds of 35,000 people.
Provides better dock connections.
Guides rainwater through folds and landscaping of the waterfront.
What is not successful about this waterfront?

Building Typology
1. Which building typology you are researching?
The building typology I am researching is hospital and recreation centers. Both typologies would be combined to make one big center that accumulates the Red Hook Community of New York City.
2. Why are you researching this building typology?
Hospitals are a very unique design and which can create an environment that can help improve one’s illness. Architecture has a lot to with the feeling provided in hospital centers, which gives me an opportunity to create an aesthetic design. Recreation centers can go hand in hand with hospitals or medical centers as they are designed for activities that keeps one busy or use their creativity in different aspects. Putting these two types of typologies together can further make a design well furbished.
3. What is the specialty of this building type you would like to research i.e. museum for dance, school for digital media…
The specialty of the medical center is Opthamology, with a side of a general health center. For the recreation center, it would be an arts and crafts studio inwhich you can test materials and have hands on experience.
4. What are the examples that you will be researching… list the examples, location and architect (10 examples)

5. What are you goals for working with this building type?
My goals for this building type is to research the different of types of designs and techniques that have been successful and unsuccessful. This way I would know what I can do to make my project a better design and what I should not do. The main question I would be asking myself is “what makes my project better and how can I improve it?”
6. What are the program elements that you see included at this point in your building? (may evolve once more research is done)
Some program elements I plan to include in my building are tying into hands on experience to eye care. These two senses are essential and tie well together. Having the view of the river provides a pleasing sight, which is great for an ophthalmology clinic. On the other hand you can also visit a recreation center that provides studio space in which you can use your "views" as a motivation to use different kinds of materials and create crafts.
