Building Typology

1.  Which building typology you are researching?

The building typology I am researching is hospital and recreation centers. Both typologies would be combined to make one big center that accumulates the Red Hook Community of New York City.

2.  Why are you researching this building typology?

Hospitals are a very unique design and which can create an environment that can help improve one’s illness. Architecture has a lot to with the feeling provided in hospital centers, which gives me an opportunity to create an aesthetic design. Recreation centers can go hand in hand with hospitals or medical centers as they are designed for activities that keeps one busy or use their creativity in different aspects. Putting these two types of typologies together can further make a design well furbished.

3.  What is the specialty of this building type you would like to research i.e.   museum for dance, school for digital media…

The specialty of the medical center is Opthamology, with a side of a general health center. For the recreation center, it would be an arts and crafts studio inwhich you can test materials and have hands on experience.

4.  What are the examples that you will be researching… list the examples, location and architect  (10 examples)

5.  What are you goals for working with this building type?

My goals for this building type is to research the different of types of designs and techniques that have been successful and unsuccessful. This way I would know what I can do to make my project a better design and what I should not do. The main question I would be asking myself is “what makes my project better and how can I improve it?”

6.  What are the program elements that you see included at this point in your building? (may  evolve once more research is done)

Some program elements I plan to include in my building are tying into hands on experience to eye care. These two senses are essential and tie well together. Having the view of the river provides a pleasing sight, which is great for an ophthalmology clinic. On the other hand you can also visit a recreation center that provides studio space in which you can use your "views" as a motivation to use different kinds of materials and create crafts.

  1. I believe a health center would be great in the area. Try to expand your research further in precedents.

Also what do you mean by recreation Center. How does it relate to health?

  3. I think the Abu Dhabi Cleveland Clinic is a very interesting combination of public and private spacing with the inclusion of recreation areas such as swimming pools and retail spaces. Thank you for the link!

  4. Hello Baljinder,
Sorry for the late response. Here are a few of my views.

Program: Health center and Recreation Center
I think this is a very interesting choice and has the potential of working very well as the recreation center could serve as a post-treatment development place for patients. Hence it is very crucial what speacial field of health and receration you are looking at. A few examples of combinations that would work well interestingly that come to my mind are:
    1. Pediatrics and Art + crafts + sports (could have workshops in both arts and sports could be for kids with special needs where physically fit kids could interact with the ones who are probably disabled)

    2. Ophthalmology + Center for blind and visually impaired (This could be a very interesting combination as the center would focus and be designed keeping in mind the needs of patients with visual special needs both before and post treatment)

    3. Physiotherapy and Sports center (again keeping the common ground of designing for physically unfit or challenged patients- both kids and adults could be very inetresting combination as both the programs would supplement each other)

    4. Psychiatry and Hobby center or rejuvenation and rehabilitation center

I am sure there are much more such examples. I would suggest selecting one particular combination and focusing design in detail keeping in mind the specific needs. This would definitely add more value and project understanding to the design.

Apart from site context and program needs, which are obviously very important design driving factors, I would also suggest looking into enhancing senses like sight, sound, textures and use these concepts for designing the spaces at a micro-level.

I really like the program selection. All the best!

  5. Hello Baljinder, i am Elena and I will be your external reviewer for this semester. I am also glad you chose healthcare typology. Water is normally associated with health because of the healing power it has, sometimes by only looking at it. I like the examples you have chosen, especially the Majima Clinic in Japan. It makes me think of something calm and clean. All the others are too strong as shapes and they remind me more of a office buildings or even a shopping mall.

So this is where I wanted to advise you not to forget that every building should be site specific. And the decision is yours if you want your building to „scream out loud“ or to be „silent and still“. It is probably a personal matter :) And I agree with D that you should also look at sights (it is New York and everyone wants to see Manhattan from different standing points) but also smells and sounds. And of course I think that your building design should offer public space to the residents that live there.

I am wishing you joyful semester :)))

    1. Hello Elena, thank you for your feedback. I also thought the same exact thing when I was looking at these buildings. Most of them look larger on a scale due to their plot size as portray themselves as office buildings. However I chose to study some of those buildings so that I can get a grasp of the different aspects and locations of these buildings. For instance, the Cleveland clinic in Abu Dhabi is a robust project but it is located on or by the waterfront. this relates to the site I have chosen for my project which leads you directly to the Hudson River. By choosing different locations and climates, I thought it would help me by showing me how these projects incorporated their environment into their program and design.

  6. I'm glad to see global examples in your research. Many modern block buildings are examples of modern beliefs of floor space economy - maximising building for buck - or so they think as so much is placed in HVAC costs of operations. These buildings need to artificially breath, heat, and cool.

Many buildings also pretend the outside environment doesn't exist, there is no story no connection to the ground - at best they just "Shrub up" the hero views, and you feel sorry for the Landscape Architect who seemed to have been compromised. Make no mistake the contrast and play between natural and manmade makes for great architecture. There is nothing interesting about an over-powering building, one is not more important than the other - architecture requires balance.

I look forward to seeing your refinement of ideas, according to your sense of balance. Well done thus far! ;-)
